Carhenge
Along a quiet stretch of Hwy 87 in the Nebraska panhandle near Alliance, stands a sculpture called Carhenge — a scaled replica of the famed Stonehenge. Thirty-nine vintage American cars, painted primer grey, are arranged in a circle approximately 95 feet in diameter. Cars are buried in pits to hold them vertical while others are welded across the top of the uprights to form arches replicating the proportion and alignment of Stonehenge’s standing stones and triliths. A 1962 Cadillac is the heel stone. Carhenge was created in 1987 by Jim Reinders as a memorial to his father.
On August 21, 2017, Carhenge was in the direct path of the total solar eclipse.
